Walking in downtown Abu Dhabi has been a cornerstone of my practice today; I walk in familiar and unfamiliar places, recording subtleties with my camera, phone, and through documenting transient memories. For most of the Emirati community, Abu Dhabi city is always experienced through a car culture, and for a landscape that represents a significant portion of Abu Dhabi’s identity, it has felt so far removed from me as an Abu Dhabian. As an Emirati artist living in the suburbs, this project is significant because it compelled me to face the silent reality of the careful curation of spaces and communities in my country. Lately, I've been going on an intuitive odyssey where I grab my camera, drive to an unidentified block in the city, park in front of a storefront that I don't know, and spend a couple of hours at night wandering the blocks, recording anything that catches my interest. What followed was a slow immersion in the city’s diverse cultures, where I had conversations with shopkeepers and learned about their stores' histories, ate at cheap restaurants where I was both welcomed and felt out of place, and developed an obsession with the gaudy, decorative lights that adorned the storefronts of downtown Abu Dhabi. Among the many things I came to love about the city were its use of decorative LED lights to help shape and accentuate shopfronts; they served as more than just a fashion statement; they gave storefronts their own unique personality. I've always been enchanted by light installations, and nighttime city walks have been a fantastic fountain of creative ideas for me. I came to appreciate how it distills the experience of city spaces and my profound memories of downtown Abu Dhabi, how it focuses on the linear and create paths that are traversed in the city. This project is about tracing my memory of walking in and around the city, from Khalidiyah to Al Zahiya, with the use of light as a source of documentation and mapping; having to look back and record my steps recounts for me the important layers of my reexperience of Abu Dhabi city.
