Wrapped Around Me is an intervention piece that investigates the theme of gender roles in our local community. I choose the palm trees that were carefully planted in the center of campus at the New York University Abu Dhabi. Students sit by the shaded benches aided by the palm trees, they engage with the space and walk through it; thus, to intervene was an intrigue to me. I used a large amount of white cotton rolls which are used to make an Emirati man’s attire (the Kandoura) and decided to wrap them around the palm trees creating a maze within the cluster of palm trees. This intervention is a metaphor for how we, as women, must navigate through difficulties of patriarchy to achieve our goals, some big and some the slightest of goals. This language of navigation can be daunting, but it does build character and somehow makes us stronger. Who knows, I could be biased.
