The series, Here’s What They Think of Me, conveys a specific curated narrative of the stereotypes an Arab woman or, more specifically, an Emirati woman would come across. It is a series that boasts satire and exaggeration; like the postcolonial and romantic tales once expressed about the Arab world through art, I wanted to challenge those exotified ideas within the context of the United Arab Emirates today. This art project encompasses a series of staged photographs which act as a tool to challenge the stereotypes; the frame of each image is supposedly zoomed out to show the viewer the setup of the photoshoot and the aim of this is to convey to the spectator that what is depicted in these photographs is unrealistic but rather choreographed. As an Emirati, what I find troublesome is that preconceived notions, in any culture for that matter, leave an imprint and could potentially feed into an identity resulting in an unfair representation. This project will allow me a platform to start a conversation on these misconceptions and I hope, through this, we can collectively stimulate constructive dialogue.
